The Survivors!
"Well, the names have all changed
Since you hung around
But those dreams have remained
And they've turned around"
We were treated to a great week of tennis at Wimbledon, complete with
thrills and, unfortunately, spills. We had some SURPRISE departures, some not so surprising. Let's see what's going on for this
year's 2nd Wimbledon Week. Also tucked in this week, at
WTA 250 on Clay. We'll quickly deal with this INTERLOPER
first, then get to what everyone's actually interested in!
Hamburg European Open WTA 250 July 6-11-2021
There's too many beautiful, unique pics of Hamburg, so this is a charmer but they have a new architecturally modern, exquisite new Museum, check it out |
Draw: 32 singles, 16 doubles
A consecutive ATP event will be held next week.
This tournament is back after a 19-year hiatus. Several big names won
the title in the past, including Steffi Graf, who won 6 years
in a row, 1987-1992; Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, a three-time
winner, and Venus Williams, who won the trophy twice.
The top seeds are (1)Yastremska (back after being cleared of
doping charges),
(2)Putintseva, (3)Zidansek, (4)Collins, (5)Ferro, (6)Teichmann,
(7)Pera, (8) Garcia* (TO QUOTE a little birdy, providing seeding/qualifiers "HA TAKE THAT!
you can tell @faradubii" :)
As you’d expect there are several German players at their home tourney
– Korpatsch, Friedsam, WCs Niemeier and Barthel, and
tournament ambassador
Andrea The Philosopher Petkovic. Qualifiers are
Melnikova, Kucová, Ruse, Minella
(An editorial comment by @Shirley Hartt. WHY are
there yet more clay tournaments during and immediately after the grass
season? Those dirt ballers have had plenty of opportunities to play on
the red stuff. Am now ducking from all the clay court fans.) You tell
'em Hartt!

The big controversy was the slippery grass courts, seemingly worse than
normal after a LOT of rain, even by England’s
standards. Many people had suggestions for improvements, but it doesn’t seem likely
that the All England Club will make any changes for next year. It did not
help that RG, arrogant once again, started their tournament a week late,
allowing players only two weeks to prepare for Wimby’s different
conditions.
One big impact was Serena
retiring, in tears, after slipping and injuring her hamstring, losing a
key opportunity to reach that elusive Slam #24. Another was Mannarino’s
retirement after a nasty fall. This may actually have kept Federer, who
was being outplayed at the time, in the tournament.
There were several compelling stories, including
Andy Murray’s return to Wimbledon, the scene of so much glory for
Sir. Andy won two matches before being totally outplayed by Shapovalov,
and sounded discouraged in his press conference, wondering if all the work
was worth it if this was his level of play. Hopefully this was just a
momentary feeling and Andy will continue playing, because tennis fans
would certainly miss the Scot.
Many fans and the American commies were very excited by 17-year-old Coco Gauff
who also made the second week, with some predicting that she could win the
tournament.
