WIMBLEDON - THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

"Welcome Back

Your Dreams Were Your Ticket Out

To The Same Old Place You Laughed About"

All England Lawn & Tennis & Strawberries & Cream & Great Britain

June 28 – July 11, 2021

It is now time to welcome the Granddaddy of tennis tournaments, Wimbledon, officially The Championships, Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, having been held at the All England Club since***

“Grass is just for cows.” In spite of Manuel Santana’s statement, echoed by a few players, including Ivan the Terrible Lendl, Wimbledon is terrific for fans and players alike. So many young tennis players dream of playing, and perhaps winning Wimby one day. So many great champions have won multiple Wimbledon titles over the years. In the Open Era they include Navratilova with 9, Federer 8, Serena, Graf and Sampras each with 7, and Venus, Borg and Djokovic winning 5. Billie Jean King has 6 in all, with two prior to 1968.

After last year’s cancellation because of the Covid-19 pandemic the tournament is largely back to normal. The various disciplines are being held, including wheelchair events and the boys’ and girls’ tournaments. There is a full draw of 128 in singles and 64 in both doubles and mixed doubles. Organizers are planning for a reduced fan capacity in the earlier rounds, with full capacity for the semifinals and the final🙏

There is one big change this year – the seedings will be based purely on rankings rather than the formula Wimby used for the men in previous years. Because of no 2020 tournament, the defending champions are from 2019 – Halep and Djokovic
.
Only Novak Will Defend His Wimby Title, Simona Sends  Her 💔

Most top players will compete, but there were a few top withdrawals: Simona, Osaka, Yastremska, Q. Wang, Nadal, Thiem, Raonic, Goffin and Wawrinka. As one would expect, most Wildcards went to Brits. Hardly a surprise, one went to Andy Murray, but the Spaniard Alcaraz and the Aussie Bolt also received them. For the women all the recipients were Brits except for the fast-rising Russian, Liudmila Samsonova, who recently achieved a ranking of No.63 with her title Win in Berlin.

Of course the big question is who will win the titles. (1) Djokovic is a clear favourite on the men’s side as he goes for his 20th Slam title to tie Federer and Nadal. Other contenders include (2) Medvedev, (3) Tsitsipas, (4) Zverev (7) Berrettini, and Steve Tignor pick (8) Roger Federer FTW (he's JesusFed so who knows, maybe he'll walk on grass, not just water!)

For the women, as usual, the likely winner is much less apparent than for the men. All eyes will be on (6) Serena (Tignor's pick FTW) as she goes for her 24th Slam title to tie Margaret Court.  Other contenders for the Venus Rosewater Dish include: (1) Barty, (2) Sabalenka, (10) Kvitova, 2017 champ (11) Muguruza, (25) Kerber Champ in Bad Homburg

Top seed contenders: (3) Svitolina (4) Kenin (5) Andreescu, (7)Swiatek, (8) Karolina Pliskova, (9) Bencic.  Ok, let's just say all 128 women are Dark Horses - a veritable WTA "Pin The Tail on The Wombles Donkey"

Simona will not be defending her Wimby title, being felled by a serious calf muscle tear making her officially NSFW.😢 Which makes THIS Wimbledon for @faradubaii and myself stress-free.  May the best woman who survives 7 matches Win!
