Clay season is here! I know the lads had already that South American thing
going, but this is the real deal! The women have it better this week with a
WTA 500, while the men go just for ATP 250s. That reflects in the draws too:
we get just two top 20 guys showing up this week, while from the women we get
nine from the top 20, including the #1. Obviously, I'm gonna start with the
ladies.

It's a WTA 500. On clay (the green stuff, so yeah...). It's a 56 players draw with the top 8 seeds having byes. Surprisingly (or
maybe not?) it's one of the strongest fields showing up in South Carolina in
a pretty long time: three top tenners including the #1 and nine out of the
top twenty. Here are the ones with byes:
Barty, Kenin, Kvitova, Bertens, Bencic, Muguruza, Mertens, Keys. The
other eight seeds are
Vondrousova, Rybakina, Putintseva, Jabeur, Anisimova, Gauff,
Kudermetova
and
Zhang. Other notables:
Mladenovic, Sevastova, Tomljanovic, Stephens, Diyas, Petkovic, LAF,
Kovinic, Bouzkova, Pera v Cornet, Giorgi, Pironkova, Davis v Brengle. Very strong field.

WTA 250. Real clay this time. 32 players in the draw. That means no byes.
It's a dramatic drop from Charleston's quality, but what can you do? Seeds
go from #53 to #106. Yep. Here they are:
Zheng, SST, Rus, Tauson, Zidansek, Paolini, Martincova, Wang (Y). Who
else is there? Buzărnescu, ALF, Bara, Kalinskaya, Schmiedlova.

Evans, Fritz, Sonego, Basilashvili. the other four seeds are

PCB, Fognini, Ruud, ARV. And four without: ADF (yes, it's
Fokina), Lopez, Kwon and Delbonis. It's a bit better
than Cagliari. Shit, I spoke too soon. In others I have trouble finding
people! Pouille, Bagnis, Kukushkin, Dzumhur and the fabulous
Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune.
