Wimbledon 2022 - Week 2

Wimbledon, The Championships
All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club
London, England
June 27 - July 10, 2022

We did flowers, we did food, now a little bit about a few British dog breeds

Don't they look regal?  In the 17th century, King Charles I and Charles II both were fond of a small type of spaniel with a black-and-tan coat. This spaniel remained popular with British aristocrats into the 19th century when it was crossed with small Asian dog breeds, giving it a flatter face and domed skull. Then, in the 1920s, breeders attempted to recreate the original version of the little spaniel based on old portraits of the dogs in English manors, resulting in the Cavalier.

Into the second week of Wimbledon with some wee upsets/glitches.

Upsets - "Alize Cornet outplayed and out-thought Iga Swiatek, something no one else had managed to do since Dubai. Tenacious, aggressive and daring, she was too good for Swiatek in every department and reached the fourth round of Wimbledon for the second time in her career, at the grand old age of 32." (The Guardian)  Cinderella Harmony Tan went over 3 hours in her defeat of the returning and aging Serena Williams and so far she is on a roll. In her mind midnight is far away or never coming. Breakout ATP player is Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven who is into the round of 16.  Of course Carlos Alcaraz is still taking no prisoners.  Did he say he was still learning how to play on grass?  You could fool me.

Glitches - Covid let us know once more that it is not a thing of the past as 3 of the top 20 men had to bow out of the tourney after testing positive for the virus.  The 3 are Matteo Berrettini, Marin Cilic and Roberto Bautista Agut.

 Those left standing...,,,,ATP/WTA

Gentlemen

Bulldogs can be traced back all the way to the 13th century in England. Thanks to their powerful physique, they were used for the blood sport of bullbaiting—in which a pack of dogs would fight a staked bull.

What a noble looking fellow - Bullmastiff.  In the 1800s, poachers were targeting the country estates of English aristocrats. In response, a huge, athletic, and courageous dog was developed that could catch and pin down any invading poacher. This dog was a mix of bulldogs and mastiffs—hence the name bullmastiff. It was large enough to be intimidating yet smart and loyal enough to follow commands. Bullmastiffs today still can be skeptical of strangers.

Whippet dogs.During the 1800s, coal miners in England wanted to take part in hunting and dog racing. However, they couldn’t afford to keep large dogs like the greyhound. So they bred a smaller dog that was just as good of an athlete and hunter. It’s likely they crossed greyhounds with small but fast terriers, resulting in the swift little Whippet. The modern version is still lightning fast and has a strong prey drive.

Thanks Hartt for your eyes!!!
