Wimbledon 2022 - Week 1

Wimbledon, The Championships
All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club
London, England
June 27 - July 10, 2022

Surface: grass

Draws: Singles 128, Doubles 64

So here we are. The third grand slam of 2022. Wimbledon, or The Championships as they call themselves, was established in 1877. This year marks the centenary of the famous Centre Court. My favorite slam because there is a part of me that likes the tradition surrounding this tourney. Traditions like the green, green lawns, players dressed in white, strawberries and cream, the Royal Box and the polite (eh depends on who is on the court) roars from the crowd.

Along with these well-known traditions, there are other traditional practices that contribute to this unique event. These include not having any ads on Centre Court, the men's and women's tournaments being referred to as the Gentlemen's and Ladies' events, and the defending men's and women's champions playing the opening matches on Centre Court.

Some changes have been made and as time moves on surely some other traditions will likely fade away. For instance on the honours boards Wimbledon is this year removing titles "Miss" and "Mrs" in front of female winners' names in order to replicate the men's boards. Ooomph - Do I hear an outraged cry of "Woke?"

There has been ongoing confusion about the seeding formula that was used in the past, and Wimbledon has stated that “from 2021 onwards, seedings for the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Singles are based on world ranking." Also this year for the first time ever there will be matches scheduled on middle Sunday.
