We're halfway through the ATP's nine - and the WTA's eight - official grass season tournaments. These include Wimbledon and the Hall of Fame Open, Rhode Island USA July 11-17th for the men, with the women's grass season coming to a high crescendo at Wimbledon on July 10th.

"Der Kiss - My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love" ~ Dmitri Vrubel 1990 mural on the Berlin Wall depicting German political leader Erich Honecker and the USSR's Leonid Brezhnev sharing a 'fraternal kiss.' Honecker had given the decisive order for the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and led the German Democratic Party from 1971 until shortly before the fall of the Wall in October 1989.

This is the 95th edition of the tournament. Last year the tourney switched from clay to grass.

Perhaps not a big surprise right after a Major, but there were a LOT of withdrawals, at least 12. They included Anisimova, Azarenka, Badosa, Fernandez, Osaka and Swiatek.

Once-gritty Digbeth in Birmingham is a developing, bohemian district known for street art, young, hip crowd events and creative workshops at the Custard Factory and Eastside Projects, head concerts at the O2 Institute, and grungy clubs in former warehouses. Digbeth Dining Club (above) is a weekend street-food market with global dishes and Victorian-era Irish pubs dot the area.

This is the 40th edition of the tournament, with Billie Jean King winning the title the first year, when she was 39 years old.

Defending champion: Ons Jabeur who won her first WTA title. (defeated Daria Kasatkina)
