Australian Open 2022 Week 2

Australian Open, Melbourne Park
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
January 13 - 30, 2022

Aboriginal Dot Art
Before Indigenous Australian art was ever put onto canvas the Aboriginal people would smooth over the soil to draw sacred designs which belonged to that particular ceremony. Body paint was also applied which held meanings connected to sacred rituals. These designs were outlined with circles and encircled with dots.

Uninitiated people never got to see these sacred designs since the soil would be smoothed over again and painted bodies would be washed. This was not possible with paintings. Aboriginal artists abstracted their paintings to disguise the sacred designs so the real meanings could not be understood by Westerners.

Ahhhh! Sweet sleep. I'm serious about my beauty rest Ok?.  Just leave me alone!!

Sweet 16 or Round 4? Doesn't matter what you call it. Who survived and is left standing as we begin the second week of the AO? Some intriguing storylines have emerged and are emerging. In the women's draw Unranked Amanda Anisimova defeating the defending champ Naomi Osaka was probably the biggest upset so far. Dani Collins, Maddie Keys, Alize Cornet (my nickname for her is Hornet) and Sorana Cirstea (my original Romanian girl) are all intriguing storylines. Let's see how they progress, or not.

On the men's side am holding my breath for Gael Monfils and Maxime Cressy to continue and of course the excitement is building for Rafa to garner his second AO trophy and add No. 21 to his slam wins.

Apart from that other stuff at the beginning of the tourney what has surprised you, good or bad, about the competition so far?

Aussie sayings: Toads, banana benders, cockies, sandgropers, crow eaters

These are favorite ways Aussies disparage those who live elsewhere. Tropical Queensland has many more bananas and cane toads than people, so they're branded banana benders or cane toads. Queenslanders get their own back, calling Sydneysiders cockroaches in honor of the omnipresent, nuclear-immune pest found around the harbor city. South Australians -- particularly early settlers -- partake in the delicacy of crow eating, while Western Australians spend their lives groping sand (sandgropers).
