Western & Southern Open - ATP/WTA Masters 1000 - Cincinnati, Ohio USA

Western & Southern Open
ATP 1000, WTA 1000
August 14 - 21, 2022

Hot off the heels of the National Bank Open (Montreal and Toronto, Canada) we're into the 2nd month of the North American Swing leading to the USO at the end of August.  I'm sure we'll see some withdrawals since we had an unexpected - but worthy - final four in both Montreal and Toronto.

Congratulations to this week's champions:

NBO Montreal
Singles Champion: Pablo Carreno Busta d. Hubert Hurkacz
Doubles Champions: W. Koolhof/N. Skupski d. D. Evans/J. Peers

NBO Toronto
Singles Champion: SIMONA HALEP (d. Beatriz Haddad Maia)
Doubles Champions: Cori Gauff/Jessica Pegula d. N. Melichar Martinez/E. Perez
"When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it's always twenty years behind the times." ~ Mark Twain (debatable but it's stuck with Cincinnati)!
Hopefully, it's not too hot or humid this coming week, since the players had little rest from Canada but not far to travel. Perhaps, too, there's more stamina in the top seeds in Cincinnati since most on both tours got rest they didn't expect with their early knockouts north of the border. In any event, it'll be another grueling week with a small breather before the USO.

This week's visuals visit some whimsical, off-the-beaten paths in Cincinnati and Ohio and one of the utmost historically significant memorials in American History👇

Corkscrew Falls - Hocking Hills, Ohio
Hocking Hills is made up of cliffs, rock shelters, gorges and water falls and deep within is where you will find this stunning waterfall. It is not on the main trail and it is something of a secret so you should not expect to see many people admiring the beautiful view whilst you are there.

Cincinnati Museum Center
If  the Museum Center looks familiar, it’s because the facade inspired the Hall of Justice for the 1970s Super Friends cartoon series. In real life, the domed Art Deco digs once functioned as the city’s bustling Union Terminal train station. It houses a handful of museum attractions all under one roof — the Cincinnati History Museum, the Museum of Natural History and Science, the Duke Energy Children’s Museum, OMNIMAX theater and the most recent addition, the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center.

Maneki Neko Lucky Cat Museum - Cincinnati
In Asian cultures (and in honor of our very own John Singkit) Maneki Neko—the ceramic waving cats you often see greeting customers at businesses—symbolize good luck and prosperity. If this is true, then Cincy’s Lucky Cat Museum may just be the luckiest place on earth. Filled with statues, stuffed animals, paintings, and all other manners of representation, this whimsical attraction brims with fanciful felines.
Surface: hard

Draw: Singles 56, Doubles 28

Big news for the tournament was Serena Williams taking part in what is likely her next to last tourney before her retirement. There was further excitement when the draw came out and Serena will play against USO champion Emma Raducanu in the opening round.

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center - Cincinnati
Opened in 2004, its location recognizes the significant role of Cincinnati in the history of the Underground Railroad, as thousands of slaves escaped to freedom by crossing the Ohio River

Railroad Underground Freedom Center Memorial in Cincinnati
An early 1800's slave pen from Kentucky transported a short distance across the border to Cincinnati, replicas of the shackles restraining the slaves inside the pens, and bronze sculpture reconstruction of a guard and those awaiting transport. Originally built in 1830, the two-floor slave pen is housed entirely within the museum. The prison was once used to house slaves as their owners waited for the trading market to become more favorable.
