Roland Garros 2022 - Week 1

Roland Garros ATP/WTA Major
(also known as The French Open)
Stade Roland Garros
Paris, France
May 22 - June 5, 2022

France doesn't have culture; the word "culture" is actually French. "Culture" derives from the same French term, which in turn derives from the Latin 'colere,' meaning to tend to the earth and grow, cultivate and nurture."

Some may call it The Rafa Nadal Invitational and who can blame them? Bear with me MCMers.  There is a distinct possibility that this may be Rafa's last FO so this thread is kind of for him.  With 13 wins some might say "Move over Roland Rafa is here."  In all seriousness what an accomplisment and some are saying "Give us one more win Rafa......" So Rafa to quote a tiny portion of one of my favorite Shakespeare monologues -  "Once more unto the breach dear friend, once more..." Would not that be some kind of victory? Whoo Hoo!!

A little of Rafa's style evolution is in order...

16 year old Rafa Nadal and his first FO win - 2003 - Look at that hair!!

Rafa - Two years later

Surface: Clay

Draw: Singles 128, Doubles 64

Roland Garros also includes mixed doubles, junior, and wheelchair tournaments. This year there is a return to full spectator capacity.

The tournament, first held in 1881, was known as the French Championships, and was only open to players who were members of French clubs. In 1928 RG was the French Open for the first time.

The story lines are persistently consistent as to the potential winners of this slam. Carlos Alcatraz's ears surely must be ringing given the frequency with which his name is mentioned. The usual suspects for the ATP are Djokovic, Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, Sinner Aaaaaaaand Rafa!! On the ladies side the defending champion Barbora Krejcikova has given notice that she is ready to defend that crown but Iga is muttering "Not so fast." I still think the ladies game is wide open with a hungry Halep, Anisimova, Sabalenka, Jabeur and Badosa. Am looking for a dark horse here but shhhh.....did I mention Azarenka and Andreescu?......
