Welcome to the New Year. May this Tennis season and the year 2022 be better, healthier than the year we're leaving!  It seems as if it's been months since we last enjoyed tennis, but it's only been about 6 weeks and boy are we ready, right?

It's already January 1, 2022 in Australia🥳 Today the ATP CUP begins in Sydney, then in 3 days competition in regulation tournies begins in earnest for both the ATP & WTA. We have 6 tournaments this week and it'll be very interesting to see WHO was naughty or nice, stayed in shape, in form, who will either continue on their rolls from last year, break out this year, or ... well ... partied too hard or petered out?  So let's get to it and Happy New Year's Eve and Happy New Year MCM from your Sheriff!👍

January Summer Tennis in Australia

ATP Cup
Ken Rosewall Arena and Qudos Bank Arena

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE - Opened in 1973. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon who won the competition in 1957, the building surrounds Bennelong Point on Sydney Harbour between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove New South Wales, Australia.

Surface: outdoor hard

Defending champion: Russia

This is the third edition of the team competition. It is a round-robin in the group stage and then the four group winners advance to the knockout SFs. Each tie will be comprised of two singles matches and one doubles. Each country will field a team of up to five players.

Fifteen countries qualified for the event based on the ranking of their number 1 singles player as of Dec. 6, and their commitment to play the tournament. The host country, Australia, received a wildcard. Initially, two qualified countries, Switzerland and France, were not slated to take part because Roger Federer and Gael Monfils withdrew. They were replaced by Georgia and the USA. However, with the withdrawals of both Dominic Thiem and Dennis Novak, Austria is out and France is back in.

Novak Djokovic was a late withdrawal and Dusan Lajovic will replace him in the No.1 spot for Serbia.

There is a complicated formula to determine the ranking points awarded, but an undefeated singles player can earn up to a maximum of 750 points. The players receive a participation fee as well as prize money. The entire prize pool is $14 million.

Melbourne Park

January 4-9, 2022

This is an unusual situation in that there is one long entry list that is supposed to be divided into two tourneys this week. But as of December 29 this has not been done. So these are the top 12 players, but they will be divided between the two tournaments at some point.

Top players from entry list: Naomi Osaka, Jessica Pegula, Emma Raducanu, Simona Halep, Elise Mertens, Daria Kasatkina, Veronika Kudermetova, Camila Giorgi, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Liudmila Samsonova, Sorana Cirstea

Wildcards: Aussies Lizette Cabrera, Seone Mendez, Ellen Perez, Astra Sharma

Withdrawal : Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Covid)

(Draws? yeah - 1) it's the WTA 2) It's a little early 3) It's the WTA😆

(This link to their draw page is all there is - the .pdf link takes you to a blank, unreadable page saying "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below" - The WTA Website doing exactly what it did in 2021😞

I have the distinct pleasure to be the last in 2021 and the 1st in 2022 to pay tribute to Shirley Hartt! For without her contributions, this blog would not be published on New Year's Eve in time for the ATP Cup.

So for the rest of the New Year, from around the Tennis World, Shirley:  thank you, gracias, merci beaucoup, Danke Shön, Mulțumesc, Spasibo, Hvala vam, Děkuju
