Miami Open 2024 - ATP 1000/WTA 1000

Miami Open ATP 1000, WTA 1000
Hard Rock Stadium
Miami, Florida, USA

WTA March 19-30
 ATP March 20-31, 2024

Surface: Hard
Draw: Singles 96, Doubles 32
The tournament was first held in 1985 and is considered the second half of the Sunshine Double.

Just a hop, skip and a jump away (kidding) from Indian Wells, CA 2024 tournament we are at the 2024 Miami Open held at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami.  Fun fact - in the 1800's it would have taken 4 - 6 months to travel from California to Florida.....

Thousands of years before Europeans arrived, a large portion of south east Florida, including the area where Miami, Florida exists today, was inhabited by Tequestas. The Tequesta (also Tekesta, Tegesta, Chequesta, Vizcaynos) Native American tribe, at the time of first European contact, occupied an area along the southeastern Atlantic coast of Florida. They had infrequent contact with Europeans and had largely migrated by the middle of the 18th century. Miami is named after the Mayaimi, a Native American tribe that lived around Lake Okeechobee until the 17th or 18th century.

************
The biggest storyline  this tournament is Simona Halep's return to play after her doping suspension and subsequent victory in her appeal to have that suspension reduced. Simona has been absent from competition since 2022 and plays Paula Badosa in the opening round. I know all eyes will be on Simona as well as the heartfelt wishes for a successful return to the tour. Her stellar career remains intact. Welcome back Simona!

Will there be upsets like Luca Nardi's defeat of the world No. 1 Novak Djokovic? Can Iga Swiatek win Miami thus making it back to back wins of Indian Welss and Miami?  The question is will she not can she.  With her dominant performance Iga is set to break all kinds of records.  The same question applies to Carlos Alcaraz Garfia.  There is no doubt he can repeat his performane but will he?

DISCUSSION CORNER

OHBH or 2HBH? So much discussion which from some comments I have read have devolved into silly season and vacuous, gratuitous blaming of Novak Djokovic for not taking tennis to the next level and therefore he has destroyed the game. I mean some of the comments shared in the GQ article with Roger  GQ article  became stupid and on par with the political discourse of the day. So the OHBH is pretty and works extremely well for some (yeah Roger am looking at you) while others have effectively employed the 2HBH. I have seen some pretty ones too with both male and female players. Why can't we say and accept that IMHO (I don't know crap about the technicality of serves etc.) the ROS is one of the most important shots. So picking a stroke that is better at it for you is probably valuable. No? Yes? In other words whatever works for you and gives you the results you want go for it and stick with it.  By the way Roger admitted in that article that he teaches his kids the 2HBH.  Ha!
