Davis Cup Finale 2023

A gorgeous Trophy!

With the Davis Cup comes the end of the 2023 tennis season. Here is wishing for an exciting, competitive and rowdy Davis Cup.

This picturesque Andalusian city is located on the Mediterranean and is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. Málaga, port city, capital of Malaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia , southern Spain. The city lies along a wide bay of the Mediterranean Sea at the mouth of the Guadalmedina River in the center of the Costa del Sol. It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 12th century BCE, conquered successively by the Romans and the Visigoths, and taken by the Moors in 711. Under Moorish rule it became one of the most important cities in Andalusia. When the caliphate of Cordoba disintegrated, the kingdom of Málaga was founded, ruled over by emirs who named it “terrestrial paradise.” After they had failed several times, Christians took the city on August 19, 1487.

The prestigious Davis Cup competition began in 1900 when British tennis players travelled to the US for a series of matches. It has grown from that modest beginning to 155 nations competing. It is named for American Dwight Davis, who donated the Cup.

Most titles: USA with 32, followed by Australia with 28.

Defending champion: Canada (defeating Australia). This was Canada’s first Davis Cup title.

There are 8 teams competing in the Final 8. Each tie consists of 3 rubbers (matches), 2 singles followed by a doubles.

To begin, it will be Canada vs Finland, Czechia vs Australia, Italy vs Netherlands, Serbia vs Great Britain. The winners of those matches progress to the semifinals.

Sadly, the host country, Spain, did not make the final 8.

There are several key players in the competition including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie, Alex de Minaur, Emil Ruusuvuori, Jiri Lehecka, Tallon Griekspoo
