Some surprises in Week 1 of the tourney. We lost Medvedev, Sinner and Fritz on the men's side. Upside it is really great to see Dimitrov move through the tourney. Hope his success continues. Alas after treating us to an absolutely thrilling match Gael Monfils withdrew from his match with Rune due to wrist injury. Sigh! For the ladies the skids came for Krejcikova, Garcia, Pliskova, Sakkari and Pegula and unfortunately Rybakina withdrew due to illness. On the upside it appears that we have a Sloane Stephens who wants to play and win (Hallelujah!) and a big shout out to Svitolina on a successful tournament after being away for about 21 months on maternity leave. Swiatek is bulldozing her way through the tourney and who can doubt that she will lift the trophy again?
