It's Carnival Time!! Brazil, Dubai, Mexico, Qatar, France

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Yay! It's Carnival week MCMers!  Shake off those winter blues.  Oh man am I homesick as I can hear the steel drums and the Soca music in my head. In the next few days the streets of Rio and other carnival cities will be ringing with the seductive sounds of the samba, steelpans, soca music and zydeco.  I bet the tennis players in Rio, Merida, Mexico and Marseille, France will be getting a bit of their groove on!!!  Did you know that carnival is celebrated in over 50 countries of the world? Venice, Italy holds one of the oldest and most famous Carnivals in the world; a public festival dating back to 1296. It was created by the Venice oligarchy as an amusement for the city's population. Some of the biggest, most popular tourist-attracting cities include New Orleans, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, and Venice, Italy.

Most carnivals have a religious underpining. The festival originated with Italian Catholics in Europe, and it later spread to the French and Spanish, who brought the pre-Lenten tradition with them when they settled (and brought slaves) to Trinidad, Dominica, Haiti, Martinique, and other Caribbean islands.Yes all that drinking, carousing and dancing feverishly is the precursor to the revellers slinking back to piety through "fasting" from Ash Wednesday until Easter.

Like past Carnivals, Rio Carnival 2023 will be infused with the sounds of the Samba. It was not always this way. When Africans were brought to Brazil as slaves they carried with them their music and dance. This African beat was incorporated into the music of the Carnival. The distinctive African rhythm accompanied by a drum backbeat gradually developed into what we call Samba today.
