We knew of course that the day will come or as someone said to me, that day - you know the one you have to put in capital letters, bold the letters and underline them - THAT DAY. The day Roger Federer retires from tennis or again as stubborn as we are we insist he is retiring from active play BUT he is not retiring from tennis! Alas in spite of our collective "nooooooooo" Roger's final game will be at the Laver Cup which will be played next weekend September 23 - 25, 2022 in London.
The outpouring of praise and admiration after his announcement is a testament to the tennis star's remarkable impact and legacy in the world of tennis, sport and beyond. He brought the arts to us through his playing style. Indeed one young man told me that he started to watch ballet performances because of Roger's tennis. Ha! Who knew?
As Roger said in his announcement he is not leaving tennis and that is some comfort. We are selfish Roger because you gave us so many hours of pleasure, not because you were winning but how you played off the court as well as how you floated around the court leaving us to question whether we were at a ballet performance or a hard hitting, grinding, competitive sport. It was both.
Thank you for the privilege and honor of watching you all these years. Watch the Rolex statement on Roger by clicking the link below.

Although not a traditional tournament and the players are not awarded ranking points, the Laver Cup is part of the ATP calendar. It was established in 2017 but this is the 5th edition of the tourney because it was not held in 2020.
There are two teams, comprised of 6 players each, Team Europe and Team World. Team Europe has won all the Laver Cup tourneys to date, including giving Team World a 14-1 drubbing last year!Three of the 6 players qualify based on their ATP rankings on the Monday following RG. The remaining three are captains’ picks.
There are 12 matches played over 3 days – 9 singles and 3 doubles. All matches are best of 3, with a 10-point match tie break if necessary. Each player competes in at least 1 singles match during the first 2 days. Which brings the question of whether Roger Federer will be able to do that, or will the rule be changed?
There are two big developments for this year’s Laver Cup. Roger Federer has announced that this will be his final professional tournament, so this will be the last opportunity for fans to see him as a pro tennis player. The other is the presence of the Big 4 – Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy
Murray and of course Federer himself. We can expect interest in this year’s tournament to go through the roof!
Team Europe (in order of current rankings): Casper Ruud, Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer. Captain Bjorn Borg and Vice-captain Thomas Enqvist.
Team World (in order of current rankings): Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe (replacing the injured John Isner), Alex de Minaur, Jack Sock. Captain John McEnroe and Vice-captain Patrick McEnroe.
